KÄTKETTY VAPAUS – HIDDEN FREEDOM

Vääksyssä sijaitsevan Danielson-Kalmarin huvilan kesässä Gertrude Bellin (1868–1926) ja Meeri Koutaniemen (s. 1987) dokumentaarinen työ kohtaavat näyttelyssä Hidden Freedom – Kätketty vapaus. Gertrude Bell toimi 1900-luvun vaihteessa tutkimusmatkailijana, kirjailijana, poliittisena virkailijana, arkeologina ja vakoojana. Bell tunnetaan vahvimmin matkoiltaan kuvaamistaan valokuvista ja kirjeistä. Meeri Koutaniemi kuvaa yhteiskunnallisia aiheita ja nostaa kuvillaan esille ihmisoikeuskysymyksiä.
Näyttely kertoo kahden kuvaajan tekemästä dokumentaatiosta samoissa maissa kahtena eri aikakautena. He kuvasivat ja havainnoivat ihmisiä sekä paikallista elämänpiiriä. Näyttelyssä yhdistyy kymmenen eri maan tapahtumat, maisemat ja murrokset Lähi-Idässä ja Aasiassa, missä sekä Bell että Koutaniemi ovat kiertäneet ja kuvanneet useamman vuoden ajan.
Näyttelyssä ainutlaatuista on kahden naisen visio maailmasta aikana, jolloin naisena yksin työskentely on ollut ja on edelleen harvinaista. Kokonaisuus pyrkii luomaan niin ajallisen kuin sosiopoliittisen jännitteen kuvaajien materiaalien välille.
Kuvallista dialogia syventävät maakohtaiset journalistiset tekstit, jotka luovat historiallisen kontekstin sekä katsauksen nykypäivään. Bell ja Koutaniemi avaavat oven näkemäänsä maailmaan, mutta myös omaan henkiseen mielenmaisemaansa – tämä rakentaa ajallisen sillan menneen ja nykyhetken välille.
Näyttelyn osatuottajana on toiminut Kuopion VB-keskus, jossa aihetta esiteltiin kesällä 2020. Salon Taidemuseossa kokonaisuus laajeni vuonna 2023 uusien vedosten ja tekstiaineiston myötä.

In the summer of the Danielson-Kalmari villa in Vääksy the documentary works of Gertrude Bell (1868–1926) and Meeri Koutaniemi (b. 1987) meet in the exhibition Hidden Freedom – Kätketty vapaus. Gertrude Bell was an explorer, writer, political functionary, archeologist and spy in the early 1900’s. Bell is best known for the photos and letters from her travels. Meeri Koutaniemi photographs societal subjects and highlights human rights issues with her photos.
The exhibition shows documentation made by two photographers, in the same countries, in two different eras. They photographed and observed people and the local way of life. Events, landscapes and changes in the Middle East and Asia, where both Bell and Koutaniemi have travelled and photographed for years, are combined in the exhibition. The vision of world by two women in time, when working solo as a woman was and still is rare, is unique. The exhibition aspires to create a tension between the materials of the photographers both in temporal as well as socio-political sense. Visual dialogue is deepened by journalistic texts of each country, which create historical context and a view to the present day. Bell and Koutaniemi open a door to the world they have seen, but also to their own spiritual landscapes – this builds a bridge in time between past and present.
VB Photograpy Center in Kuopio, which showcased the topic in summer 2020, has been a production partner in the exhibition. The exhibition grew with new prints and texts in Salo Art Museum in 2023.

The Villa of Danielson-Kalmari is a historical building near the canal of Vääksy. The leading historian of his time, state councillor Johan Richard Danielson-Kalmari (1853–1933) spent summers in the villa with his family for decades. The neo-renaissance villa is restored for year-round use. Two rooms serve as a museum showcasing the life of J. R. Danielson-Kalmari. In the summers there are art exhibitions of invited artists and during winters the building is used as a music school of Asikkala region.
